The Alliston 93 Leafs joined the RHL for the 2007-08 season after GM Newcombe acquired the folding Vancouver Islanders franchise. The 93 Leafs received a lot of grief from two original seven GM's upon the announcement of the team name. David Le of the Jets was quoted as saying: "Sounds gay ...... whatever ..... nothing exciting." and Commisioner Filion added: "Why doesn't he draft Doug Gilmour first overall if he loves the 93 Leafs so much.... big deal, they made it to the semi finals."
The 93 Leafs would miss the playoffs by 6 points in their first year which was a decent effort for a new GM in a very difficult league. That year they defeated Commisioner Filion's Oakville Red Wings in the consolation finals in a huge upset that would land them in 7th place. The very next year, the 93 Leafs would capture the RHL Cup! After knocking out the top seeded Lindsay Wazooz in the semi-finals, they would again face the Red Wings, but this time in the RHL Championship game. GM Newcombe made Commisioner Filion eat his discouraging words 2 years in a row. Many thought that the 93 Leafs were a force not to be reckoned with, however the very next season they put up a very poor effort while defending their title finishing 12th in the regular season. They were knocked out the first round of the consolation playoff as the Wazooz absolutely destroyed them 6-1.
During their first two seasons, the 93 Leafs were able to build a very solid team with players such as Jeff Carter and Thomas Vokoun. Both of these players staying loyal with the team for two seasons, from inception all the way to the Cup. Could those two 93 Leaf Veterans be what was missing during last seasons train wreck? Surprisingly, over Newcombe's RHL career, his team has not been overloaded with real Maple Leafs. Last year's defense however, was anchored by an under performing Thomas Kaberle. Combine that with the lack of former 93 Leaf veteran presence and an under performing GM, it isn't difficult to see why the 93 Leafs plummeted to the bottom of the standings.
At the 2010-11 draft we can expect to see GM Newcombe take a dip in a Hot Tub Time Machine and travel back to 1993 to sign Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Dave Andreychuck, and Felix Potvin. Seriously, without a better effort this year, I expect them to miss the playoffs unless they are able to assemble a solid roster as they did the year the captured the Cup. ..... is Yanic Perreault still playing?
INTERESTING FACTS: The 93 Leafs have only made the playoffs once in 3 years and were able to capture the Cup that same year. Despite winning the cup in 2008-09, the 93 Leafs have the third worst record among active teams and the second worst winning percentage among active teams, the only active team with a worse winning percentage is the Sarnia Colts.

I am an anonymous Internet user. I am not a part of this league, but I sure wish I was. If i was a part of this league I know for sure I would check this blog everyday and post some comments every so often so the poster knows that all of his time and efforts are appreciated.
ReplyDeleteDear User:
ReplyDeleteI am the commissioner of this league and I invite you to come out and apply for in-statement in our fine group. We have a few managers that may not appreciate the work and sacrifice it takes to be the best league in the world. It's people like you who start out as as inspiring managers, who become RHL hero's that we make infamous right here on this blog.
I too, am an anonymous internet user who rarely visits 'blog' postings such as this. But the almost scripture-like epilogue with this league, has intrigued me to no end. I must hand it to whomever is the brainchild 'behind the mask', so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI am at the edge of my chair just waiting for the next day to come, so I can learn all about the fascinating and captivating Juggernaut that is...The RHL.
Yo, just stumbled onto this website as I sit here drinking a Keystone Light. This RHL sounds totally chill, almost as chill as lax bro, but only if it was lax, which it's not. But still chill. I just told my wife to make the author of this webpage a sandwich then I banged her while she watched.
